     The Berom (sometimes also spelt as Birom) is the largest autochthonous ethnic group in the Plateau State, central Nigeria. Covering about four local government areas, which include Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi (Gwol) and Riyom, Berom are also found in southern Kaduna Statelocal government areas.       The Berom speak the Berom language, which belongs to the Plateaubranch of Benue–Congo, a subfamily of the large Niger–Congo language family. It is not related to the Hausa language(which belongs to the Afro-Asiatic family) or other Afro-Asiatic languages of Plateau State, which are Chadic languages. The United States Government has pledged to support Nigeria in ensuring a transparent, credible and peaceful general election next year. The United States Consular, John Bray, made the pledge during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day organised by the US Consulate in Lagos. The event with the theme: ‘Media and transparency of the 2019 election’, touched on issues bordering on media transparency, safety of journalists and electoral disputes. A 33-year-old woman identified as Sokari West was allegedly stabbed to death yesterday by her husband during a fight in their house in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. Daily Sun gathered that the victim, a mother of two, had a quarrel with her husband, Ibisaki, a native of Minama community in the same local government area, over her alleged refusal to prepare a meal for the family, which later led to a fight. According to community sources, the victim had allegedly refused to prepare the meal as ordered by her husband on Saturday, and went out to celebrate her birthday with friends and returned late in the night. The sources further disclosed that the couple has had several marital crises in the past, which led to their separation, but they later reconciled after the intervention of their families. Church protests herdsmen’s killings in Ibadan

The Word Communication Ministry in Ibadan yesterday joined other churches in the country to protest spate of killings by suspected herdsmen. Members of the church, following a directive from Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), after the Sunday service, were seen carrying placards with various inscriptions to protest herdsmen’s killings in Nigeria and government’s insensitivity to killings of Christians, among others. The church’s Senior Pastor, Sunday Popoola called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the spate of killings by herdsmen in the country and urged him to eschew tribalism, ethnic cleansing and nepotism. “We are sad and worried because too many lives are, unnecessarily, being wasted. Bandits kill 45 in Kaduna

El-Rufai: Army battalion for Birnin-Gwari Barely three days after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris visited Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State over the spate of killngs, bandits at the weekend killed 45 people, including women and children. Condemning the attack, Governor Nasir El-Rufai said the Federal Government’s plan to establish an Army battalion in Birnin-Gwari would soon be implemented. During his visit, the IG ordered immediate deployment of additional 200 policemen in the area. The bandits stormed Gwaska village around 2:30pm on Saturday, killing 45 people and setting many houses ablaze. Kaduna State Police Commissioner Austin Iwar, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, confirmed the 45 casualty figure. In a strongly worded statement issued from her Virginia, United States base, Senator Obasanjo flayed the Buhari administration for dodging the fundamental issues of bad governance raised in the statement issued by her father, Dr. Obasanjo last Tuesday. Instead of drawing wisdom from the letter issued by her father, she expressed dismay at what she described as the cheap tactic of the Buhari apologists in drawing unconnected issues to run away from the “advice and admonishment of one of the most brilliant leaders to ever emerge in modern Africa.” In a strong disavowal of the recycled 2013 letter she wrote in the wake of President Obasanjo
